Premier Announces New Measures For Businesses

The premier of New Brunswick announced some new measures to assist employers and businesses in the province during the COVID-19 update.

Blaine Higgs said he wants employers, businesses and workers to be safe during the state of emergency and continue to work safely.

“Worksafe NB is waiving premiums for businesses for three months. Worksafe NB will continue to work collaboratively with businesses and employers to help them through this difficult time,” he said.

Higgs said safety at work is especially important in these time and precautionary measures should be taken, whether that be good workplace hygiene, or where possible, allowing workers to fulfill duties remotely.

“Worksafe will continue to be part of the solution and they will also visit work sites to ensure compliance but also to help employers to ensure their employees are able to perform their duties safely,” said Higgs.

He said property taxes are required to be paid by May 31, there are still options.

“We will review late penalties on a case by case basis to see if the penalty can be waived due to undue financial challenges such as having to close a business due to COVID 19,” said Higgs.

He said because of the declaration of the state of emergency has caused some confusion about what can stay open and what can stay closed, there is also a guide available online or businesses can call the Business Navigator line at 1-833-799-7966.

There is also a COVID-19 page specifically for businesses.
