Let Pedestrians Cross Streets Safely

Given the number of crosswalks, it is clear Moncton is a pedestrian friendly city.

Now as the weather improves, the City of Moncton’s Transportation Coordinator has a reminder for both pedestrians and drivers.

Stephane Thibodeau says just because you are at a crosswalk, doesn’t mean you can walk out into traffic with impunity.

Thibodeau says, “It cannot be assumed that just because you are pushing a button that the vehicles may stop. It is really important to stop, look, make sure you have eye contact with those drivers that they are going to stop, so that you can cross safely.”

He says, crosswalks can give pedestrians a false sense of security and both they and drivers must follow the rules of the road to ensure everyone’s safety.
