Anglophone East Superintendent Says No Further School Prom Discussions Yet

High school students will return to class full time on April 12th, but the decision by the Anglophone East School District not to hold proms still stands at this point.

A decision was made last month by the School District to hold a graduation ceremony similar to last year, using a virtual component. But proms and safe grads and other end of the year activities run by schools would not be held, because of the uncertainty of the pandemic over the next few months.

Superintendent Gregg Ingersoll says given the fact that the students are returning to school full time, has not changed their decision. But he suspects there is going to be a desire to revisit this.

“We’ve had no discussions about that yet. At this moment we are just asking people to give us some time to get the students back in and then once everyone is in, we’ll just see where we are with the levels and COVID-19. Those are really the main factors in us planning anything for the end of the year,” Ingersoll says.

He adds the concern is the unpredictability of the alert level, and it is too soon to make any predictions on changes at the end of the year, so they aren’t planning any extra events.

“Right now, we’re in yellow. If we can stay in yellow, then great. But if we go to orange or red or if we have to end up having to close the school system before that time, that could change everything. So to make all of the preparations and get ready for that and have to pull it all back, it’s a lot of work,” Ingersoll says.

High school students are scheduled to return to full time, in person learning on April 12th.
