Irving Pulp and Paper Limited has been ordered to pay a $3.5 million penalty in connection with several incidents between 2014 and 2016, where liquid waste was dumped into the Saint John River.
The company pleaded guilty to three offences under federal Fisheries Act on October 9th.
$2.34 million of the fine will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund, while the remainder will be given to the University of New Brunswick for research.
This is one of the largest penalties to be levied in Canada as a result of an environmental violation.
Irving Pulp and Paper Limited Mill has also committed to construct a new liquid waste and sewage treatment facility..
