Irving Oil undertaking $100M project at Saint John refinery

A massive upgrade is set to begin at Canada’s largest oil refinery over the coming weeks.

Irving Oil has announced a $100-million modernization project at its Saint John refinery.

The work will focus on its Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, which refines crude oil to produce gasoline and diesel.

President and CEO Jeff Matthews said the project is an essential investment in energy security for the regions they serve.

“As we build for the future, we do so with the knowledge of continued growth in demand for traditional energy products,” Matthews said in a news release.

Work will be completed in a phased approach over the summer and fall, beginning in June, according to the company.

The project will bring in around 675 skilled workers, including labourers, scaffolders, pipefitters, boilermakers and insulators.
