Interim Provincial Conservative Leader Calls HST Hike ‘Job Killer’

The Interim Provincial Conservative leader Bruce Fitch calling the HST hike recently announced in the Gallant Government’s budget, along with the property tax increase, the moratorium on shale gas and more job killers in the provincial legislature.

Bruce Fitch says when they were making the decisions they said they wanted a referendum on HST for New Brunswickers, “we didn’t want to back them into the corner and say we’re going to give you deep cuts to education, deep cuts to the health care system unless you agree to an HST.”

Premier Brian Gallant says what’s happening is the provincial Conservatives want to skate around and not take a position because they know the truth, “they know that if they were to say the HST should be reversed that comes with the consequence of cutting into education, it comes with the consequence of closing down rural hospitals.”

Gallant says it also comes with the consequence of not being able to support those who are vulnerable and lift people out of poverty and that’s why Fitch is being wishy-washy.
