Inmate death at Atlantic Institution

The death of an inmate from Atlantic Institution in Renous is under investigation.

Correctional Service Canada says Matthew Marshall died in custody on Sunday.

Marshall was serving a sentence of more than 10 years for a number of charges, including:

  • robbery;
  • failure to comply with a probation officer;
  • possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition (x2);
  • assault causing bodily harm (x3);
  • possession of a controlled substance;
  • assault with intentional use of force;
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited or restricted weapon in a motor vehicle;
  • possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order;
  • assaulting a peace officer (x2);
  • carrying a concealed weapon; and
  • prison breach with intent.

“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances,” corrections officials said in a news release.
