The Greater Moncton SPCA has a lot more mouths to feed currently.
Executive Director Dave Rogers says they have around 120 cats and kittens at the shelter right now. The concern is, they are headed into a season where even more are expected to come in.
“They’ve been roaming neighbourhoods and they have been going to peoples homes and people have been feeding them on their back deck. Now the weather is getting colder, so we’ll have an intake now of juvenile and adults cats in the next 30 to 60 days,” Rogers says.
Rogers says they often rely on foster homes or even the other rescues in the city to help, “We have collapsible kennels, and we have some foster homes. In the past we’ve been able to turn to some of the rescues, but in reality now, even the rescues are being stressed. Most of them are full, so they can’t even help us.”
As for dogs, he says they currently are housing around 75 of them, but they often see more dog adoptions in the fall.
“Peoples lives being what they are, they tend to surrender more in the summer months, but in the fall, it seems to switch around,” Rogers adds.
