Important For Smoke Detectors To Have Working Batteries To Help Save Lives

More and more homes are making sure they have smoke detectors to alert them if a fire breaks out.

But Moncton Division Chief of Fire Prevention Charles Leblanc says they find a lot of the detectors aren’t working, “The biggest issue is that people remove the batteries, just because of nuisance. When people cook or burn something, whether it be toast, breakfast or lunch, the detector goes off, and people remove the batteries.”

In new home construction, smoke detectors are now required in all bedrooms, previously, only one per floor in your home was required.

Leblanc says they don’t see as many carbon monoxide detectors as they would like, “Obviously through education, people are starting to get better informed about them and starting to get them. Carbon monoxide detectors are still an issue, but I think it is a case that people still don’t realise when carbon monoxide detectors should be in place.”

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that is caused by fuels not burning completely, including wood, gasoline, coal, propane, natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil.
