Ice Jams Cause Concern In Perth-Andover

A state of emergency and mandatory evacuation order remain in effect in Perth-Andover even after a massive ice jam in the St. John River gave way yesterday, and water levels decreased a bit.

Concerns were raised the weekend after ice jams formed along the St. John and Tobique Rivers just north of the village. Riverwatch worried that they might clog the river at the Perth-Andover bridge that spans the St. John River and flooding low-lying residential and business areas nearby.

Those ice jams gave way last night, but residents remain on high alert, for fear of flooding.

Members of the Canadian Red Cross set up temporary shelter for those needing a place to go.

Concerns have also now been raised for the community of Grand Falls.
