Ice Build-Up Proves Challenging For Public Works Crews

Public works crews in have been having a difficult time trying to remove ice build-up on streets and sidewalks recently.

A mixed bag of precipitation including rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and snow along with plummeting temperatures has made clearing streets challenging.

Despite higher than normal amounts of salt being applied across the city, Moncton spokesperson Isabelle Leblanc says salting doesn’t seem to be working as well as in past years.

A new source for salt is being used this season and officials are testing the substance despite the fact it has met the required standards.

Leblanc says while some are blaming the slight reduction in the 2018 salt budget, she adds the city has made no changes in its level of service at this point.

Gateway, the operator of Highway 1, is also reporting difficulty in getting to bare pavement despite using a variety of de-icing materials.

A warm-up in the forecast later this week will likely help efforts.
