The chair of the Bid Committee for the 2020 Brier is encouraging people to put down deposits on presale tickets as a way of showing Curl Canada the community is invested.
Jacques Robichaud says this presale practice started when St. John’s, Newfoundland put in their bid for the 2017 Brier, and Curl Canada liked it so much they adopted it going forward.
“Deposits is what is gonna show Curling Canada that the community is backing our bid, and we’d really like the community to support us a bit more than they have so far with the deposits,” says Robichaud.
He adds the economic spinoffs are conservatively estimated in the $15 million range.
“In a time of the year which is the first week of March, I mean this is big for the hotels, restaurants, everybody, taxi drivers,” says Robichaud. “It’d be big for the community.”
However, he adds it would also be great for Curl Moncton as they are going to be finishing up their ice sheet expansion in the upcoming year, and the new facility, as well as the Brier 2020 would help them raise the profile of curling in the area.
Robichaud says the deposit is $50 and because they must submit their numbers to Curl Canada by the end of this week, he is encouraging anyone thinking about it to do so as soon as possible.
