Hundreds Take Part In Autism Awareness Walk

It was the first ever Autism Awareness Walk to be held in Metro Moncton, but hundreds turned out to take part.

Lori Meunier says when her son was first diagnosed, she didn’t really know anyone who had autism. Four years later, it is becoming more common, “A lot of people who get a new diagnosis, once they start mentioning it, the resources that are available and the support that is out there to find another family that is going through it, is a lot more common than it was a few years back.”

She finds it helpful to talk to other families, and that is where she gets most of her support, “Once you start to talk to other parents, that ‘s when you can relax a little, chuckle a little and start realizing that someone else actually knows what that is like. There’s a lot of relief that comes from actually talking to someone that knows what you are going through. “

She says holding a walk like they did over the weekend, helps to bring families together to support each other and it also educates those who aren’t aware of what autism is.

April is also National Autism Month.
