HST Hike, No Road Tolls, Civil Service Cuts In NB Budget

It should come as no surprise but the HST in New Brunswick is being increased by 2 percent effective July 1st.

The Gallant government unveiled its second budget today which will include cuts to the civil service but no highway tolls.

In his budget speech, Finance Minister Roger Melanson says the province listened to most New Brunswickers who said they didn’t want any cuts to healthcare and education.

Meantime, the corporate income tax is going up to 14 per cent from 12 per cent.

The tobacco tax is also increasing in each of the next two years.

Despite these tax increases, the provincial government is expecting a $347 million deficit in the next fiscal year and a balanced budget is not likely until 2020-21.
