Hillsborough residents may see smoke during live‑fire training

More smoke than usual may be visible in Hillsborough over the next two weeks as firefighters take part in live‑fire training.

The Hillsborough Fire Department said it’s hosting the Mobile Burn Unit with support from the Office of the Fire Marshal and New Brunswick Community College.

The department explained the unit provides controlled fire simulations that help firefighters build skills, gain confidence and prepare for real emergencies.

Firefighters from across the southeast region are expected to take part in the training.

The department said smoke may be visible near the provincial infrastructure yard in Hillsborough and in the areas of Karla, Kerry, Pleasant and Jerry Street.

Depending on wind and weather, smoke could drift farther across the region, according to the fire department.

Although the exercises are planned and supervised, the department said residents should still call 911 if they believe they are witnessing an actual emergency.
