Parents with children at Hillcrest School will learn tonight whether or not it will be included in a proposal for a new school in the west end.
Superintendent for Anglophone East Gregg Ingersoll says the District Education Council will reveal their decision tonight, “If Hillcrest is going to be included, then they will let the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development know, that they want to include Hillcrest in that request for the new school. We expect to hear in December or mid winter whether that request is granted or not. If the DEC decides not to include Hillcrest, then Hillcrest will just remain as it is, and will reopen next September.”
Ingersoll adds, “Because it is an older school, there will come a point that the DEC may have to look at a midlife upgrade, or a new school. There are a lot of options there, but of course one of the options is that the school would close and the students would go to neighbouring schools if there is room.”
Surveys were distributed to parents, and their responses were divided on whether or not to include Hillcrest in the new west end school. The message has been clear at public meetings, to leave the school as it is.
