High Street Apartment Building Evacuated After Small Fire Discovered In Walls

Residents of an apartment building on High Street were evacuated early this morning because of smoke.

That’s from Moncton Fire Department Platoon Chief Paul Bruens who says they got the call at 8 this morning.

“On arrival, we found smoke on the exterior of the building going up the outside wall,” says Bruens. “We quickly accessed the outside wall, completed some extension checks and found a hidden fire in behind the wall, the fire was extinguished, [and] extension checks were completed on the inside apartment.”

Bruens explains what extension checks are.

“[That’s] when we go behind the wall, and pull the wall apart to look for hidden fires,” says Bruens. “On arrival there was smoke visible on the exterior of the apartment, so firefighters used tools to open the wall up to check for hidden fire.”

Bruens says the tenant living in the apartment where the fire started in the walls is temporarily homeless and the Red Cross is providing assistance.

“Minimum damage to the apartment, light smoke damage, no interior fire damage,” says Bruens. “The cause hasn’t been determined, our investigator is on the scene still, and he should have a cause sometime today.”

All other tenants were allowed to return into the building.
