Heritage Developer To Transform Old Moncton High School

Heritage Developments has reached an agreement in principle with the province to purchase the old Moncton High School for $1 million.

Premier Brian Gallant says MHS was – and will continue to be – an important part of Moncton.

“We’re going to make sure that this building continues to serve the community when it comes to arts and culture, the vibrancy of the downtown area and ensuring that we are able to continue to grow the economy here in Greater Moncton,” the premier notes.

The school auditorium and gymnasium will be maintained for community use.

Heritage Developments has already restored a number of historic properties including the Capitol Theatre, Heritage Court and Marvens Place.

Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins has been a longtime champion of the project and gives credit to the school alumni and others for helping to save the building.

The MH Renaissance group will be partnering with Heritage Developments to lease space in the former school for cultural purposes.

President Dennis Cochrane says the public library will not become a new tenant since that was not a shared vision.

“We have thus modified our request to the City of Moncton and we removed from that discussion any consideration of the relocation of the library,” he notes.

Cochrane adds negotiations are continuing with at least one potential tenant – the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada.
