There was a heavy police presence on Fredericton’s north side Monday afternoon as officers investigated a shooting.
Police and other emergency crews were called to the 600-block of Union Street at 1:20 p.m. Monday.
Officers found a man with a leg injury which was later determined to be a gunshot wound, according to deputy Chief Martin Gaudet.
“Out of an abundance of caution, significant resources were deployed to the area. Schools in the vicinity were in a hold and secure for a period of time,” said Gaudet in a news release.
One person was arrested and later released without charges, he said, adding a firearm was also located in the area.
“Through the investigation it was confirmed that the original victim had sustained a self-inflicted gun shot wound in the leg, due to an accidental discharge. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening,” he said.
The hold and secure was lifted by 3:20 p.m. and officers cleared the scene by 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Lynn White, who lives near the area, said she was shocked to find out about the incident.
White said she did not learn about what was going on until a family member contacted her.
“There’s kids in the area. We need to know. We should be notified. Not by Facebook, not by a family member in Marysville. That’s how I found out,” said White.
“I’m not in fear but I’m in fear for other people, that’s what I worry about. We should get the proper information.”
Police took to social media to warn people about their presence and asked them to stay away from the area.
