Health Officials Say Whooping Cough Outbreaks Occur In Cycles

Health officials continue to keep an eye on the number of confirmed cases of Whooping Cough in the region.

There are currently 47, most of them in the Greater Moncton area.

Regional Medical Officer of Health Dr. Yves Leger says the disease tends to occur in cycles, “The peaks that we see every three to five years, can vary. So in 2012, we saw a lot of Pertussis activity, which may have been in part because of the timeline from of our previous peak which was longer than the three to five years.”

In 2012, we saw around 1400 cases of Pertussis.

The peak prior to 2012, was in 2004.
