Growing Need For Youth Mental Health Services

The need appears to be growing for more mental health counselling in the community for young people.

Clinical therapist Lesley Smyth with the Atlantic Wellness Community Centre says society has been doing a better job in recent years in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.

Smyth says her centre receives referrals daily from young people who are struggling and need help.

“We are flooded with enw referrals on a daily basis. Right now we are averaging about six or seven new referrals a week,” she notes.

According to Smyth, referrals typically come from families themselves along with doctors, social workers and school guidance counselors.
