Group Sought To Run Emergency Homeless Shelter

A community organization is being sought to operate Moncton’s emergency shelter at the Lions Community Centre on St. George Street this winter.

Fire chief Conrad Landry said the building is now being prepared to house the homeless during the colder months.

“Right now, staffing is going to be the hardest thing for organizations to find. So I think that realistically, we’re looking at January… but it might be earlier.”

Until the shelter is ready, Landry said two large heated tents will be set up in the back parking lot of the Lions Centre by December 19.

The two tents will be able to accommodate about 126 people.

Landry said the organization who runs it will be providing wrap-around services.

“These folks are vulnerable people. They need some help and support, from mental health support to addictions, etc.”

He added it will be up to the operator and the province to decide if the shelter will have a safe injection site.
