Greens Want To Change Up Rules For Seniors

The Green Party leader wants to make sure seniors are provided with the close contact they’ve been missing out on since March.

In an announcement Monday morning, David Coon said if the Green Party is elected, he wants to create a designated family caregiver separate from the visitor’s quota.

“Seniors are deteriorating in the nursing homes without regular contact from their family members who had been acting as their family caretakers, previous to the shutdown. One of the things I will do immediately is change the rules to create a designated family caregiver, separate from visitors,” he said.

“I have heard from many, many spouses, husbands and wives and it’s heartbreaking. It’s cruel what’s going on right now as they see their loved ones deteriorate in nursing homes,” he said.

Coon said this change will help reduce the burden on nursing home staff focus on the quality of life and care of nursing home residents.

“With proper training, we can stop breaking people’s hearts and have seniors in nursing homes all over New Brunswick receive the love and attention they deserve and need from these designated family care members,” he said,

Coon also announced he sent in a letter to Elections NB to ask if the first two hours at a voting station can be set aside for seniors and the vulnerable population.
