Green Party Gearing Up For September’s Election

With about five months to go until September’s provincial election, the leader of the Green party says he’s feeling pretty great.

David Coon was in Saint John this weekend for the party’s annual general meeting and tells us the momentum is building significantly.

“We’ve got half our candidates or more now in place lined up,” says Coon. “A great mix of candidates. 46 per cent women so far.”

Candidates so far include a deputy mayor, municipal councillors, a band councillor, farmers, nurses and teachers.

Coon believes one of the big issues come election time will be the fact many basic services, like road maintenance, appear to have fallen by the wayside.

“They’re not getting [the] attention they need, almost like the government doesn’t really realize it’s supposed to be in charge of governing,” says Coon. “So I think that’s an issue that people are going to be concerned about.”

Coon says people are also frustrated with the inaction to address serious issues in the health-care system.
