Greater Monctonians Encouraged To Make Positive Commitments At “Go Beyond Earth Day” Event

A local man is urging residents to celebrate Earth Day at the Moncton Farmer’s Market on Sunday.

Olivier Weil spoke to Moncton City Council about the importance of the “Go Beyond Earth Day” event.

He says when it comes to the environment, he feels the terms awareness and education are quite mute.

“The event is designed to motivate people, and I think that motivation and commitment is what I think the environment needs from human beings,” says Weil. “Not just for the environment, I think our own mental, physical and emotional health requires commitment.”

Weil says it starts at 9 tomorrow morning with a yoga class for up to 100 people and then all the activities will start.

“There’ll be exhibitors and educators in the main building of the Farmer’s Market going on all day,” says Weil. “I’m really happy to see that NB Power will be there in the parking lot with a 40 foot trailer featuring all the technology they currently have to help homes become more energy efficient.”

Weil adds there will also be booths in the educator and exhibitor section about eco conservation, outdoor activity groups among others.

He says kids are welcome to become an Earth Day Ambassador and help bring people to commitment stations where they can choose from a list of commitments.

“And then there’s cards and pens, and they can write down their commitment,” says Weil. “They can think of something on their own, if there’s an idea that may not be there that they want to commit to like more gardening, more active transportation, more gratitude, more respect. Different things for their mental, emotional, physical health that will help them care more for the planet.”
