Greater Moncton SPCA Says Number Of Animals Up, Adoptions Down

The Greater Moncton SPCA often sees an influx in animals this year, but their concern is the number of adoptions appears to be down.

Director of Animal Welfare Nanette Pearl says last Friday afternoon, they took in 26 cats, 2 dogs and 3 smaller animals.

She says she would describe this time of year, as high intake, but low output..but the numbers this year are down a lot more than previous summers, “We usually do 50 to 80 adoptions a month, but so far this month, we are at around 15.”

She adds, “Rat and rabbits and other small animals are much harder to adopt out, than the cats and dogs, but we have so many. The cats and kittens are coming by the hundreds this month.” With adoptions down, they have to be able to find a way to feed and care for them.

Pearl says, if you were thinking of adopting a pet, now is the perfect time to do so.
