The Becca Schofield All World Super Play Park is holding a grand opening at 5:30 tonight at the Frank L. Bowser School.
The short informal event will feature remarks from Mayor Ann Seamens, MLA Bruce Fitch, Becca’s parents Anne and Darren Schofield, and other community leaders.
The park was set to open over the weekend but had been postponed due to weather-related delays and turf installation.
Kelly MacDonald-Mason is one of the volunteers who helped build the inclusive playground.
“It’s going to be so nice, especially for people who are dealing with somebody maybe in a wheelchair or with mobility issues” she says.
In addition to the turf making it easier to get around the park, it features a merry-go-round that accommodates a wheelchair.
“You can unlock it and wheel a wheelchair into the middle and lock it into place. So children in wheelchairs, or adults, can get on and spin along with the kids who can stand on the outside,” says MacDonald-Mason.
About $650, 000 was raised for the park in honour of a Riverview teen who’s #BeccaToldMeTo campaign sparked a global kindness movement.
