Garrison Building 66 To Become Centralized Food Bank

Moncton will be getting a centralized food bank after last night’s City Council meeting.

The City bought Garrison Building 66 from the Department of National Defence for $250,000 and are turning it over to the Food Depot Alimentaire for the up front price of $1 – although the FDA is losing their $50,000 a year grant from the City for the next 5 years to recoup the cost.

City Manager Jacques Dube says in the winter of 2014 they learned the federal government planned to demolish the building.

“At that point we engaged in discussions to determine what the conditions would be for the City to acquire it for some purpose, we also consulted widely within the community, we sought organizations who would be prepared to purchase the building or lease the building,” says Dube.

Certain groups in attendance last night, including the Cadets, and the 8th Hussars represented by Elisabeth Rybak are upset about losing the use of the building.
