Future Of Six Schools In Anglophone East To Be Decided

Public meetings will be held later this month, to help decide on possible school closures in Sackville, Moncton and Irishtown.

Chair of the Anglophone East District Education Council Harry Doyle says sustainability studies were completed last year on three schools in each community.

“Student numbers are dropping. The question would be, do we need three schools in Sackville? Do we need Marshview, Salem and Tantramar High or can we make a combination. The same with Forest Glen, Mountainview and Sunny Brae. Do we do repairs on those schools or do we build a new school?” Doyle says.

Doyle says sustainability studies are done to look at the age and condition of the schools, and also the number of students, whether it has increased or dropped.

“It is really about the facilities and whether we are going to continue to exist in the facilities we are in. We go out to the community and ask them how they feel,” Doyle adds.

Public meetings are scheduled for October 16th in Sackville, and on October 18th at Sunnybrae.

Two more meetings will be held after that, before the District Education Council meets to make a decision.

Once a decision is made, the DEC must submit their proposal to the province for final approval.
