With the application for federal approval for the Energy East Pipeline being filed by TransCanada Corp, what would the proposed pipeline mean for the fishing industry?
Maria Recchia of the Fundy North Fisherman’s Association explains in some ports, fishers regularly have their lobster traps and nets cut off by tankers, and that would only increase.
Recchia says they’re also worried about spills of heavy oil sinking to the bottom of the ocean, because lobster and scallops are both bottom-dwellers. She says a spill in Saint John, for example, could easily spread down the coast of Nova Scotia and as far as Maine.
