Fundraiser For New Fredericton Mosque Surpasses $25K Goal

There’s been an outpouring of generosity towards the Muslim community in Fredericton after the terrorist attack at a mosque in Quebec City where six men were murdered during evening prayers.

In just a few days time, a $25,000 goal to help build a new mosque in New Brunswick’s capital city has been shattered. The page was created just one day after gunfire broke out at the mosque and the country was left shocked and in mourning.

“It is important for us to show Muslims in Fredericton that they are welcome in our community, especially during this difficult time,” the page reads. “We invite people from the Fredericton to join us in showing our Muslim neighbours that they are loved, valued, and alone.”

The current mosque is too small and the location, on the Lincoln Road, is unsafe because there aren’t any sidewalks and the speed limit in the area is also high.

Dr. Abdelhaq Hamza of the Fredericton Islamic Association says demand has grown significantly with the arrival of the Syrian refugees.

“You want a place where you can bring your kids and socialize with other people, other families where you mingle with people who have been here two, three, four generations and guide you through your adaptation period,” says Dr. Hamza.

“Every time we have to gather people in large numbers, we have to seek other venues where we can have the large number of people in.”

The plan, according to Dr. Hamza, is to leave the website up until probably late next week.
