Canada’s largest literary festival kicks off this weekend.
The Frye festival is back for it’s 20th year and has added a few new components to celebrate the milestone.
A poet is chosen to be the event’s official “Poète flyée”.
However, program director Emilie Turmel says this year, the festival will appoint two!
One will express themselves in french and the other in English.
This is part of Moncton’s new poet laureate program, in collaboration with the city.
They will be presenting their works at various official city events as well as build a community project.
Additionally, six of the seven past “Poète flyées” will be at the this year’s closing ceremony.
They will read some of their work from the past 15 years at Frye Jam on May 4th.
A total of 35 special guest authors from across Canada and abroad are also attending this year’s event.
Residents can also take part in guided tours of the city, visiting certain spots that were included in novels while hosts read excerpts from the texts.
There will also be a variety of workshops for residents to attend and Turmel says there is something for everyone.
From composing a story with illustrations for ages 5 to 11 to novel writing classes for young adults and poetry for teenagers.
There are even skill developments for adults and Marseillaise for emerging professional writers.
You can register for workshops by heading to www.frye.ca
The goal of the festival is to encourage communities to be interested and involved in literature.
