Frustrations Grow Over New West End School

Looks like a new west end school will be built on the current Bessborough site, according to an election candidate in Moncton South.

The new school will merge Hillcrest and Bessborough as one.

Cathy Rogers recently stated on her Facebook page, that initial planning has begun to build a new school on the Bessborough property, which is the only one being considered.

But Charlotte Robinson-Rocca says that wasn’t the impression they were given, “I think a lot of parents thought, well, if we merge those two schools and create something new, the Hillcrest legacy and the Bessborough legacy won’t be lost. But now Cathy Rogers is saying all along they only planned to build on the Bessborough site.”

A statement from a spokesperson at the Anglophone East School District says that they also were not informed that this site was the only one being considered.

Robinson Rocca says, “When Cathy Rogers had her campaign workers out, people were asking questions about where the new school would be built. Population wise, the new west end has a much larger population, as does Bessborough School, than the old west end and Hillcrest School. I think it is a vote grab. It is an opportunity for her to reassure Bessborough parents that she has their back.”

She adds, “I think Bessborough is a fantastic school and I think the teachers are fantastic and it has a great parent committee. The students are great as well. As a matter of fact, I live around the corner from Bessborough. I have nothing against the school at all. I have a problem with the process, that has occurred and this late announcement by Cathy Rogers that, this is what they had planned all along, and that they just didn’t tell us about it until now.”
