Frigid Temperatures Reduce Effectiveness Of Salt On Roads

When it comes to making roads safe, salt only works effectively within certain temperature ranges.

That’s according to Andre Cormier, a communications officer with the City of Moncton.

“The salt’s effectiveness is limited once the temperature reaches minus 12 degrees Celsius, and then we typically go to a different type of abrasive which is usually sand,” says Cormier.

Cormier says as the temperature drops the salt doesn’t react as well with the snow which makes it harder to melt.

He adds switching vehicles over to using sand instead of salt is very easy and not complicated at all.
