Tax season has started and for those looking to file taxes, free clinics are available.
Althea Arsenault, the manager of resource development at the NB Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation said they’ve been partnering on the Get Your Benefits program has been around since 2010.
“It’s a specific program that we partnership with the CRA and other federal and provincial government departments and other non-profit organizations and it’s all about getting New Brunswickers to get their income taxes filed for free,” said Arsenault.
She said the program has been offered by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Revenue Agency for about 48 years.
“If you have a total family income is under $35,000, and you’ve got one person in your family, you’re eligible to get your taxes done for free at one of these clinics,” said Arsenault.
“It goes all the way up to more than 5 people, at 52,500 for income and below.”
Arsenault said filing taxes can open up a lot of benefits provincially or federally. It can be used to automatically get certain benefits or to prove an income.
“For example, your HST GST rebate. That comes automatically, but only if you file your taxes,” she said.
Participants are reminded to bring their tax information slips and receipts to the clinic.
Free tax clinics are also available all year round.
