Fredericton Police Officer Calls His Treatment Shameful

A Fredericton Police officer who was recognised for saving the life of a woman from drowning is now trying to save his own job.

Constable Jeff Smiley was charged with domestic assault last February but then was acquitted with the judge saying the investigation was fundamentally flawed and Smiley’s arrest was illegal.

Smiley says after the acquittal, he was offered 80 thousand dollars to just go away and told if he did not resign, he would face charges under the Police Act.

Smiley refused to resign and has formally complained about the investigation that led to his arrest. Smiley says those involved are being investigated for perjury, falsifying police documents and breach of trust.

Fredericton Police currently have five officers under investigation.
