Former Senator Erminie Cohen Passes Away

A former Canadian senator and social justice activist from New Brunswick has died.

Erminie Cohen passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday at the age of 92.

Cohen was appointed to the Senate in 1993 and served until her retirement in 2001.

Before becoming a senator, Cohen was named to the first New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women in 1978 and co-founded Saint John Women for Action.

She was also a founding board member of Hestia House in Saint John, which offers shelter to abused women and children.

After her retirement, Cohen helped set up the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation to build awareness around adoption.

Cohen received numerous awards for her work, including the Order of Canada and the Order of New Brunswick.

A funeral service will be held at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home Chapel on Manawagonish Road in Saint John at 1 p.m. Monday.
