A blockbuster trade in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs dealing their former captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators.
Wendel Clark once captained the Toronto Maple Leafs and says Dion Phaneuf received more blame then he probably should have.
He says when your the captain of a team that hasn’t performed well you bear the brunt of the blame.
Clark says the deal makes sense for the Leafs long term because it gives them cap space when moving forward with their rebuild.
He says Toronto is the biggest hockey market in North America and calls it “a tough spot to play in when you’re not winning”.
When asked about the new logo the Maple Leafs will wear for their centennial season, Clark says he likes it and was glad to find out no rash changes were made.
The trade included 9 players, which sent Dion Phaneuf, Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey to the Senators.
The Leafs acquired Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindbert as well as Ottawa’s 2nd round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
