Forest Fire Prevention

Late April and the entire month of May is one of the worst times for forest fires

New Brunswick residents are urged to take special precautions to make sure fires are not carelessly ignited.

Grass fires are a major concern because of the serious damage they can cause.

In 2014, 180 fires burned over 100 hectares of forest in the province.

The 10-year average prior to last year was 238 fires burning over 330 hectares on average.

The Department of Natural Resources encourages mulching, composting or hauling debris to a local landfill instead of burning it.

A permit from the department is required for any fire larger than a bonfire.
