Florence Continues To Batter Carolinas

At least five people, including an infant, have died as tropical storm Florence causes catastrophic flooding and dangerous storm surge in the Carolinas.

The storm made landfall on Friday morning as a category 1 hurricane and is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Saturday night.

But the storm’s slow-moving speed means its effects will continue to be felt for days to come.

Forecasters are calling for as much as a-metre of rain, with some communities already picking up nearly 60 centimetres.

Wilmington, North Carolina, recorded a wind gust of nearly 170 kilometres per hour — the strongest wind in the city in six decades.
