Fire Forces Evacuation At Moncton Seniors Residence

A fire in a retirement home on Elmwood Drive has left 36 people temporarily displaced.

Moncton Fire responded to calls at 500 Elmwood Drive at Villa Heritage residence at just after 3pm this afternoon.

Platoon Chief Paul Bruens says the fire was contained to one apartment, but smoke spread to the rest of the building.

He says they managed to extinguish the fire quickly, but the one unit has extensive damage.

Bruens says firefighters did a great job of assisting the tenants as they evacuated down the stairwell. He adds, many of them had mobility issues.

Twenty-six firefighters from five stations were on scene for around three hours.

There’s no word on a cause just yet.

Bruens says there are 250 residents that live in the building.

He says contractors are working to cleanup the residence in the hopes of allowing 35 of the tenants to return home tonight.

RCMP, Ambulance New Brunswick, NB Power and Codiac Transpo were also on scene to assist.
