Moncton firefighters are raising awareness of the importance of having an escape plan.
Fire Prevention Officer Steve Richardson says a mom told him just last week how important it is to her family, “Every Saturday, they do a fire drill, but the kids want her to go with them and do it in a different room in the house. This is a big deal for them, every Saturday to practice a fire drill. So, public education is working, we’re slowly getting the message out there.”
Richardson says escape plans are not only in the case of fire. You should be prepared in the case of any emergency where you need to get out of the building in a hurry.
“There could be a gas leak, there could be another incident in the building that they need to be aware of. They need to know where to go, how to get out of a building, the safest and quickest way and be some where where they’re altogether so we can check in with them to make sure everyone is out,” Richardson says.
“You need to learn by doing, especially with children. They will take that with them, hopefully to wherever they go, as they get older, if they’re away on a sports trip or they’re away at school or wherever they are, they’ll know to practice or figure out the best way to get out of a building.”
