UPDATE: Fire At Downtown Moncton Restaurant

Fire has damaged the Taj Mahal restaurant on Main Street in downtown Moncton.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Paul Bruens says just before 10am this morning, firefighters noticed thick black smoke coming from the building, “A crew was out doing building checks this morning and as they were coming down Main Street they noticed the fire. So it was a quick deployment from the crew that was already on scene. The fire originated in one section of the building and extended up into the roof area.”

Everyone inside the restaurant and from apartments located above were quickly evacuated, and all managed to get out safely.

A portion of Main Street from Westmorland to Lutz was closed to traffic while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

“There’s moderate damage to the first floor and minor damage to the other levels,” Bruens told us.

Fires in the downtown aren’t common, but Bruens adds, “It’s a very commercial area with residential properties and it’s a tight area so it’s harder to work. Makes it more unique to work , more challenging for firefighters on scene,” Bruens added.

Nineteen firefighters were on scene to help battle the blaze.

The cause is still under investigation.
