Feds Kick In $51 Million To Expand NB Power Energy Efficiency Programs

The Government of Canada is investing $51 million in energy efficiency programs run by NB Power, according to Federal Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

He adds for the first time, homes heated by oil or natural gas will be included in these programs, with NB Power estimating the average incentive available to homeowners is $1,800.

“The Total Home Energy Savings Program applies to energy efficiency changes for example better insulation, doors and windows, home heating and renewable energy systems, and heat recovery ventilators,” says LeBlanc.

Provincial Treasury Minister Roger Melanson says this program will reduce power bills for New Brunswickers, while also helping the environment, and creating up to 400 jobs as people retrofit their homes, and businesses.

The combined funding from both levels of government totals $234 million over five years.

The feds are kicking in $51 million, while the province is spending $82 million (over five years) through NB Power, on top of $101 million budgeted for making government owned buildings like schools, and hospitals energy efficient according to Melanson.

“We also as a provincial government invest in our own assets and buildings […] we want our own buildings to be more energy efficient so we also save some money as we heat our own buildings, [so] taxpayers [are] saving some money along the way,” says Melanson.
