Federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May is supporting the City of Moncton in its bid to stop the spraying of the herbicide glyphosate in the Turtle Creek Protected Watershed.
Mayor Dawn Arnold recently sent a letter to the provincial environment minister urging him to not allow the spraying by JD Irving on Crown land near the region’s drinking water supply.
May says she has worked in the field of herbicides and pesticides and she doesn’t believe glyphosate is a safe product.
“The reality of glyphosate is that the World Health Organization’s cancer agency, the International Agency For Research On Cancer, determined a number of years ago that glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen,” she says.
May is calling the spraying outrageous.
But Environment Minister Serge Rouselle cites a recent provincial Health Department report which indicated no increased risk to New Brunswickers exposed to glyphosate.
