Shediac Farm To Take Pumpkins After Halloween

A local farm would like to take your pumpkins after Halloween.

Kavanagh Farm in Shediac accepts pumpkin donations each year.

Charlene Kavanagh says their animals are always very grateful, “We use the pumpkins to supplement our feed for all of our critters. We have a pig, goats and sheep and chicken, ducks and rabbits. Everyone loves pumpkin.”

Kavanagh says pumpkin acts as a natural de-wormer for any animal.

Last year donors were very generous, “We wound up with I believe it was around 320. We freeze them and we also share with one of our farmers down the road. The critters last year ate pumpkin until February.”

Pumpkins can be dropped off at the farm after Halloween, “Give me a call at 878-8281, I can pick up a few. Or if you’d like to come out to the farm with your pumpkins, we can let you feed the animals and give you a tour. We did have a couple of people collected pumpkins last year and delivered them to us. If you would like to get together with your neighbour and collect pumpkins and bring them out in a truck, I’ll unload them, and give you a tour.”

Kavanagh says there are some pumpkins that the animals can’t eat though, “If they are painted or have a lot of wax from a candle in them, or if they are really moldy, we’ll have to get rid of them.

She has also had inquiries about straw bales, “We will take those as well. If you have gotten one for decoration and don’t know what to do with it afterwards, we will use them.”
