This is fire prevention week which is the perfect time to have a chat with your family about such things as making an escape plan in the event of an emergency.
RBC Home Insurance spokesperson Paula Bandi says besides having smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, there are other things to consider too.
Only about one-third of homes have a fire extinguisher but with many fires starting in the kitchen, Bandi says it’s critical to have one.
“It’s very important for your kitchen and also if you have a fireplace or a wood stove. It’s an added security,” she notes.
For insurance purposes, Bandi says it’s also important to have a full inventory of your home, either by capturing everything on video or making detailed lists.
