SUMMARY:Fred Pellerin Au nom du père
DESCRIPTION:Fred Pellerin is one of Quebec’s most celebrated storytellers\, known for transforming the small village of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton into a living universe of legends\, humour\, and human observation. A graduate in literature from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières\, he turned an unexpected path into a remarkable career\, building his work from the oral traditions he grew up with and the stories passed down by his family and community. \nOver the past two decades\, he has created a major body of work made up of acclaimed storytelling shows\, each rooted in the characters and myths of his village\, including Dans mon village\, il y a belle Lurette…\, Il faut prendre le taureau par les contes!\, Comme une odeur de muscles\, L’Arracheuse de temps\, De peigne et de misère\, Un village en trois dés\, and La descente aux affaires. His first show alone toured extensively across Quebec and France\, earning him major recognition early in his career and establishing him on the international Francophonie circuit with thousands of performances. \nIn his new show\, he returns once again to Saint-Élie-de-Caxton\, where reality and imagination constantly blur. When the village priest dies\, a simple burial decision—inside or outside the cemetery fence—sparks three days of wake filled with debate\, revelation\, and unexpected truths. As always\, the village itself becomes a chorus of voices\, each carrying fragments of memory\, rumour\, and lived experience. \nWith humour\, poetry\, and a distinctive narrative voice\, Fred Pellerin crafts a story where the ordinary becomes extraordinary\, and where collective memory is reshaped in real time. \nPerformance in French.

SUMMARY:Disappearing Before Our Eyes - Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the launch of Disappearing Before Our Eyes: Photographs and Stories from Grand Manan Island by Peter Cunningham! \n\nThrough the stunning lens of renowned photographer Peter Cunningham\, Disappearing Before Our Eyes chronicles the quickening change sweeping across contemporary island life through the memories of older generations and the aspirations of the young.\n \n“In this book\, I’m honoring traditions that are disappearing\, but also documenting a place still teeming with human life and unpredictable promise.”\n \nThis event is free and open to the public\, and books will be available for sale courtesy of the Grand Manan Museum.\n \nHosted in partnership with Goose Lane Editions\, Chapel Street Editions\, the Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association\, and Grand Manan Museum.\n \nABOUT THE BOOK\n \nThe island of Grand Manan lies at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy\, the largest in a string of islands that stretches down the coast into the Gulf of Maine. Peter Cunningham first came to the island in his mother’s womb\, accompanying his father\, who studied fog on nearby Kent Island. As a child\, Cunningham would get painfully seasick when he went out on the boats\, but even then he noticed that traditional ways of life were changing: yoked teams of oxen were replaced by diesel-powered bulldozers and “dead reckoning” navigation was supplanted by radar.\nDisappearing Before Our Eyes chronicles the quickening change sweeping across contemporary island life through the memories of older generations and the aspirations of the young. On Grand Manan\, catch from the sea is still paying the bills and public investment goes into building wharves instead of tourist amenities. Cunningham’s photographs bear witness to the struggle to maintain an island culture of self-reliant individualism in the face of the economic forces of globalization.\n \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n \nPeter Cunningham first came to Grand Manan in his mother’s womb in 1946. As a child\, he made frequent trips to Grand Manan\, accompanying his father who was studying fog and weather patterns on Kent Island. Over the course of his career\, he has photographed singers\, teachers\, chefs\, playwrights\, athletes\, accountants\, actors\, fishermen\, and clowns. His photographs and short films have been exhibited in New York\, Krakow\, London\, Paris\, Tokyo\, Jerusalem\, Kigali\, Nanjing\, Beijing\, Berlin\, and Grand Manan. Today\, Cunningham divides his time between Manhattan and Grand Manan. He is the co-author with Peter Matthiessen of Are We There Yet? A Zen Journey through Space and Time.

SUMMARY:Art Opening - Andrea deBruijn
DESCRIPTION:Manic Pixie Print Girl Brushes Modernist Paint Chip Off Shoulder \nThe public is invited to Andrea deBruijn’s art opening at the Capitol Theatre Art Gallery on Tuesday\, August 11\, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. \nThe visual artist’s exhibit Manic Pixie Print Girl Brushes Modernist Paint Chip Off Shoulder showcases monotype screen printing. By using this particular method\, Andrea deBruijn challenges printmaking’s established conventions\, and positions print as a site for exploring abstraction and materiality. \nAndrea deBruijn’s monotype artworks are a reference to abstract expressionism. The artist wishes to celebrate the art of print with this exhibition by putting a light on the tools and processes at play. \nContrary to the technology of printmaking\, which produces multiple prints of the same image\, monotypes create one-of-a-kind artworks. During the creation process\, the New Brunswick based artist applied inks to a blank silkscreen and used a squeegee to impress the ink onto paper\, ensuring that each print is unique. \nAndrea deBruijn earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Print Media from Concordia University. Since then\, she has been invited to work in print studios across Canada and around the world\, and has exhibited her work both locally and internationally. Currently a Printmaking Technician at Mount Allison University\, Andrea will soon embark on a new body of artistic research as a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Alberta.

SUMMARY:Jean-Michel Blais
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Michel Blais is a Montréal-based pianist\, composer\, and performer. His debut album Il was named one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 Albums of 2016\, launching an international career that has since accumulated more than 580 million streams worldwide. Known for blending virtuosity with emotional clarity\, Blais creates music that moves fluidly between solo piano\, orchestral writing\, and electronic textures\, often shaped by improvisation and deeply personal expression. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and someone living with Tourette’s syndrome\, he also draws insight from his experience as a special needs educator\, bringing a rare sensitivity and humanity to his work. \nJean-Michel Blais was ready to make an epic statement. mirador\, the pianist-composer’s fourth album\, finds the Montrealer turning his gaze onto a wondrous world—exchanging contemporary minimalism for a light and generous maximalism. It’s an odyssey that spans choirs\, strings and the music of the Andes\, from Spanish caves to Estonian forests and all the way back to the basement in Nicolet\, Québec\, where Blais first imagined adventures. \nThe origins of mirador were remembrances from childhood. As a musical kid—and\, even if he wasn’t fully aware of these things yet\, as a queer person\, with Tourette’s—Blais’ basement was his imaginary lookout\, his mirador\, from which he could dream the world. There\, he’d browse in wonder through a Larousse encyclopedia; he’d play with the family’s cheap Hammond organ and endlessly replay the same cassettes. \nFor 2022’s aubades\, Blais had begun experimenting with orchestration. Now\, he was drawn to the promise of the human voice—of singing as “pure instrument.” Working from his apartment’s flimsy kitchen island\, Blais conceived a 12-part chorus\, without lyrics. Soon\, with help from William Brittelle (LA Philharmonic\, The National)\, he had assembled a choir of baroque singers—and then added a string quartet of his friends. \nComposing this material “unleashed something\,” Blais says. One of his prized childhood tapes had been a bootleg of music from the Andes\, recorded off the radio. His parents\, who were amateur ballroom dancers\, had taught their son to dance the salsa\, the mambo\, the cha-cha. He had taught himself Spanish—and was so moved by his first visit to Central America that he wanted to quit the music conservatory and give all his possessions away. Throughout Blais’ twenties\, he made visits to Nicaragua\, Guatemala and Argentina\, falling in love with traditional Andean folksong\, especially artists like Los Kjarkas and Charijayac. On mirador\, Jean-Michel Blais offers a path back to childhood—cut a crown from a piece of paper and suddenly you have a kingdom.

SUMMARY:Pierre Hébert Grandiose
DESCRIPTION:Every morning\, we wake up with the same goal: to make our lives grand. \nWe dream about it\, we exhaust ourselves chasing it\, we lose ourselves along the way\, we stumble\, we get back up and sometimes\, just for a fleeting moment\, we actually get there. And in that instant\, everything suddenly makes sense. Every effort\, every detour\, every setback was worth it for that perfect moment that feels like it says it all… right before everything slips away again. \nFour years after the end of his tour Le goût du risque\, Pierre Hébert is finally back on the road with a brand-new show: Grandiose. \nHe returns as the same sharp-witted\, sometimes cheeky\, sometimes unexpectedly moving storyteller. Offering a fresh\, humorous\, and wide-eyed look at the world around us\, and the absurd beauty of chasing something bigger than ourselves. \nPerformance in French.
