Many were surprised at the location announced for the new school that will replace Bessborough and Hillcrest schools.
It will be built next to Bernice MacNaughton high school, despite the community’s request it be on the Bessborough property.
Anglophone East School District Education Council member Norval McConnell says they had no say in the decision but is demanding an explanation, with this motion during last night’s meeting:
“The District Education Council of Anglophone East School District requests appropriate department staff and district office staff prepare and present, to the DEC and the PSSC (Parent School Support Committee) of Bessborough and Hillcrest, a timeline for the decision making process, an explanation of how each location was scored to determine the chosen location and other factors relevant to the decision,” he says
He says he’s heard concerns from many residents in the area.
“The community feels that location matter and it’s obvious some of them are struggling with this, and they’re struggling because it doesn’t appear transparent to them and I think they were hopeful about where it was supposed to be and now it’s not going to be there or doesn’t appear it’s going to be there,” he says.
Construction on the new school is expected to start in 2022.
