Dry Conditions Common At This Time Of Year

Grass fires have plagued fire departments recently and provincial fire bans were in place all last week.

They were lifted on Sunday, but New Brunswick remains under a restricted burn with fires permitted only between 8pm and 8am daily.

Moncton Fire Chief Conrad Landry says dry conditions are not uncommon at this time of year, “The soil is wet, but everything else, the winter kill is very dry. The dry on top of the soil the grass, branches, that will burn. So it is better to burn in July and August in campfires because everything is green at that time.”

Landry says the fire department responds three or four times a day on average to campfires that are not behind a residence.

Last weekend, a fire in a marshy area along the Riverfront Trail in Moncton burned for almost two and a half hours, because it spread very quickly in dry conditions.
